EARLY BLUES RECORD LABELS
Top to bottom (left to right): FAMOUS HOKUM BOYS: "Papa's Getting Hot" (Homestead 16098), recorded April 9, 1930. 78 Quarterly (1:5, 1990) stated, obviously in error, that no copies of this record are known.[AS] ROSA HENDERSON: "He May Be Your Dog, But He's Wearing My Collar" (Silvertone 3002), recorded October 26, 1923. Fletcher Henderson accompanies on this Vocalion recording reissued on Sears Roebuck's flagship label in 1925. [AS] HAZEL MEYERS: "Bleeding Hearted Blues" (Bell P-255), recorded c. December 1923. Bell used this scarce blue-label variant very briefly for its few race-record issues.[AS] LUCILLE HEGAMIN & HER BLUE FLAME SYNCOPATORS: "Lonesome Monday Morning Blues" (Cleartone C-74), recorded for the Arto Company c. May 1921. [KN] REV. J.C. BURNETT with SISTERS LUCILLE SMITH & FANNIE COX: "I've Even Heard of Thee" (Meritt 2203), recorded 1926. This extremely rare label was produced for the Winston Holmes Music Co. of Kansas City. [KN] KITTY BROWN & LEROY MORTON: "He's Never Gonna Throw Me Down" (Paramount 12223), recorded in New York c. June 1924. East Coast vaudeville blues of this type were still the main staple of Paramount's race series at this point, but within a year their focus would begin to shift to the authentic Southern country blues for which they are best remembered today. [KN] JANE LUCAS & GEORGIA TOM: "Fix It" (Savoy 502), recorded in Richmond, Indiana, on November 19, 1930. A pseudonymous release by Mozelle Alderson and Thomas A. Dorsey, on one of Gennett's rarest and shortest-lived labels. [KN] TRIXIE SMITH & THE JAZZ MASTERS: "My Man Rocks Me" (Paramount-Black Swan 12164), recorded c. September 1922. Paramount produced this label especially for reissue of Black Swan material after acquiring that pioneering black-owned label in 1924. [KN]
