In the early days of the Victor Talking Machine Company, Nipper was not sacrosanct. Always looking for a possible alternative to their yet-unproven dog, Victor filed U.S. trademark applications on several Nipper substitutes, including a monkey and a woman clutching a rose in her teeth. Thankfully, these were never put into production.

A somewhat later Nipper substitute did see the light of day, however. The extremely rare version of the Monarch label shown here was introduced by Victor in early 1904 for a short series of Chinese records. Recording data for this side (a "descriptive" battle scene in Chinese, with sound effects) have not been found in the Victor files. Rather, it is part of a series recorded in China by the International Zonophone Company in 1903, a rare instance of Zonophone masters having been issued under Victor labels.
