"STANDARD" RECORD
(circa 1906-1908)

Rare Standard labels, not attributed to the Standard Talking Machine Co. of Chicago

Most collectors are familiar with the common, enlarged-hole Standard Disc Records, which are simply Columbia pressings relabeled for the Standard Talking Machine Company of Chicago. The two specimens pictured here, however, have no apparent connection to Standard Talking Machine. Both are pasted over non-Columbia brands, and neither shows a distributor or retailer. The similar typography and odd use of quotation marks suggests that these labels share a common link, but even that cannot be confirmed.

The specimen on the left is a 10" single-sided green-label Zon-O-Phone pressing with a dark red, kidney-shaped "Standard" label pasted over the original. A ghost image of the Zon-O-Phone trademark has bled through the paper and is faintly visible in the photo above. The original Zon-O-Phone issue dates to late 1905 or early 1906, although there is no telling in what year the "Standard" label was affixed

The specimen on the right is a Star (Hawthorne & Sheble) pressing with a full "Standard" label pasted over the original. A semi-circular window cut in the label allows the original Star label information to be read. This Star pressings probably dates to 1907, predating Star's takeover by Columbia.
