A POLLY RECORD

Polly Portable record label

This rare label was produced by an unknown manufacturer for the Polly Portable Phonograph Company (353 Fifth Avenue, New York). The company filed a trademark application for the Polly Portable brand on September 2, 1925, claiming use on phonographs and parts since the previous month. The application did not mention records, however. The lack of catalog numbers suggests that these records were given away with Polly Portables rather than being sold.

The Polly Portable was a cheap machine that could not be wound while playing and used what it termed an "oscillator" (a folding cone with a rudimentary diaphragm at its apex, into which the needle was inserted) in lieu of a conventional reproducer, tone arm, and horn. It was also sold for a time under the Brunswick brand. The original instructions, packed with the machine, are shown below.
