The Billy Murray Online Discography

The Freelance Recordings
(1919–20)

A Discographical Checklist

Latest Updates: December 16, 2009
Related SitesThe Billy Murray Pages  |  Mainspring Online Discography Project

The following checklist — which lists all Murray records appearing on labels other than Victor or Edison during his 1919–20 freelance period — is presented as an aid to collectors attempting to complete their Murray collections, and also in the hopes that collectors can fill in any missing numbers. This list is in the public domain and may be freely reproduced without permission.

In late 1918 or early 1919, Billy Murray returned to freelancing, after having been exclusive to Victor and Edison since 1909 (see Billy Murray's Recording Contracts: A Case Study for details of these agreements). The original company files documenting most of the recordings listed below, with the exception of Columbia, have long since been discarded. Therefore, these listings are reconstructions, based on firsthand inspection of the original discs and surviving ancillary materials.

Please note that we already have full discographic data for the records listed here, which will be published in full in an upcoming work from Mainspring Press — but we would appreciate an e-mail from anyone who has verifiable Murray items, on minor labels of the 1919–20 period, that are not listed here. Our thanks to the many thoughtful contributors who have already added so much information to this checklist!
