Penewell and his An Exploratory Discography By
Allan Sutton
Jack Penewell was one of the stars of Marsh Laboratories' Autograph label in the mid-1920s. Playing a Stella "Twin-Six" guitar, Penewell was already a hit with Midwestern radio fans when he cut his first known sides for Orlando Marsh in late 1924 or early 1925. He later went on to record a few titles for Paramount that were issued on their low-priced Broadway label. Penewell was not a jazz or blues musician by any stretch of the imagination, but a few of his records have a certain white-Midwestern-bluesy quality that appeals to modern collectors. This listing, which is based on the Marsh catalog and reliably reported pressings, is very preliminary. If you own other Penewell originals, we'd appreciate hearing the details (preferably with label scans or photos for confirmation); you can e-mail us at Mainspring Press, and all contributors will be acknowledged in the updated versions of this discography. (Please don't submit data from previously published discographies or other secondary sources, which often contain errors.) Our thanks to James Manker for making the original Autograph catalog and the Penewell photo available.
